How to read a spec line
Four decisions, and the rest is delivery
Size, height, grade and how you get into the box. Answer those four and the yard can put a number on it.
- Doors that swing freely. On a level base, a good used container opens with one hand. We check every set of doors before delivery.
- A solid floor. Marine plywood floors should be flat and dry, with no soft spots.
- No daylight. Stand inside with the doors closed. Any pinhole of light means water gets in, and cargo worthy certification rules that out.
- Surface rust versus rot. Surface rust on a used container is cosmetic. Rusted through panels are not, and those containers do not make it into the yard.
- Honest grading. Ask how the seller grades. We inspect and certify each one and tell you what you are getting.
What one trip means
A one trip container was built overseas, loaded with cargo, and sailed across the ocean once before being sold here. That single loaded crossing is its whole service history, which is why it still looks factory fresh: one color of factory paint all the way around, a clean marine plywood floor, a lock box welded over the lock rods, and doors that swing with one hand.
What cargo worthy means
Cargo worthy is a real standard, not a sales word. The container is structurally sound, the floor is solid, the doors seal, and it is wind and water tight. It has spent ten to fifteen years crossing oceans, so expect dents, scrapes and surface rust outside. Inside it is dry and ready to use. Rusted through panels never make it into the yard.
Standard or high cube
Height, and nothing else. A standard container is 8 ft 6 in tall outside; a high cube is 9 ft 6 in, which puts clear interior height at roughly 8 ft 10 in and gives a taller door opening on the same footprint. That one foot is the difference between ducking under a shelf and walking to the back of the box.
Door options
A standard container has one set of cargo doors at one end. Double doors put cargo doors at both ends and turn the box into a drive through. A tri-door adds a side door set to one end. A man door with a rooftop vent is the one to pick if you will be walking in and out all day and want air moving in summer.
